Energy is one of the biggest controllable costs for most SMEs. But energy jargon can make it difficult to navigate.

Meaning energy is also one of the least understood costs.

In our conversations with business owners and facilities teams, we hear the same thing again and again:

“We just want to know what actually matters, not another technical acronym.”

Bills, contracts and supplier calls are full of jargon.
kWh. Net Zero. Smart meters. Heat pumps.

Without a dedicated energy manager, it’s hard to know what these terms really mean, or which ones affect your costs.

So here’s a plain-English guide to the energy language you’re most likely to encounter, and what it actually means for your business.

Kilowatt-hour (kWh)

It sounds technical.
It’s actually simple.

A kWh is just a unit of energy used.

If a 1,000-watt appliance runs for one hour, that’s 1 kWh.

Your electricity bill is basically:

kWh used × price per kWh = your cost

If you reduce usage, you reduce spend. It’s that direct.

Heat Pumps

Electric heating systems that move heat rather than generate it.

They pull warmth from air, ground or water.

Why they matter:

Lower running costs than gas boilers

Lower carbon emissions

Higher upfront cost

Great for long-term savings. Less ideal if capital budget is tight.

Green Energy

Electricity from renewable sources like:

Wind

Solar

Hydro

Biomass

It produces little or no carbon.

Important to know:
Buying “green” energy doesn’t automatically reduce how much energy you use.

Efficiency still matters more than labels.

Great British Energy

A proposed publicly owned clean energy company announced by the UK government.

Its goal:

Invest in renewables

Improve energy security

Reduce reliance on imports

It doesn’t directly affect your bill today.
But it may shape future supply and pricing.

Smart Meter

A digital meter that automatically sends readings.

No manual submissions. No estimates.

Modern meters (SMETS2) send half-hourly data, which allows:

Accurate bills

Usage tracking

Identifying waste

For businesses, the data is often more valuable than the meter itself.

Net Zero

Balancing the carbon you produce with the carbon you remove.

In short:

Emit less. Offset the rest.

The UK’s target is 2050.

For SMEs, this usually means:

Reducing energy use

Switching to cleaner energy

Tracking emissions

Cost savings and carbon reduction often go hand in hand.

Ofgem

The UK’s energy regulator: Ofgem

They:

Set market rules

Protect consumers

Monitor suppliers

They don’t sell energy.
They police the system.

Inflation (Energy Context)

General price rises across the economy.

For energy, that means:

Higher wholesale costs

Increased network charges

Supplier costs rising

Even if you don’t use more energy, your bill can still increase.

That’s why efficiency protects you from price volatility.

Energy Price Cap

A limit on what suppliers can charge households.

Key point:

It does NOT apply to businesses.

Commercial energy contracts are market-based.

So SMEs must manage usage and procurement carefully. There’s no safety net.

Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)

The government department responsible for UK energy policy:
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

They shape:

Energy security

Legislation

Net Zero strategy

Business reporting rules

If regulations change, it usually starts here.

The takeaway for SMEs

You don’t need to memorise every term.

But you should understand three things:

How much energy you use

Where waste happens

What actions cut costs fastest

Because energy savings aren’t driven by jargon.
They’re driven by visibility and control.

If you can see the data clearly, decisions get easier. And cheaper.

Understanding the terminology is only the start.

What really matters is visibility.

When you can clearly see how and where energy is used, cutting waste becomes straightforward.

Optimal Monitoring supports larger and multi-site businesses directly, while smaller organisations can often access the same insight through our partners.

Because better data, not more jargon, is what reduces costs.

A practical guide to automated energy management

In 2026, the difference between average and high-performing energy teams will come down to focus, knowing which priorities genuinely move the dial, and which create noise.

Across the UK, organisations are facing a more complex energy landscape than ever before. Prices remain volatile. Regulatory expectations continue to grow. Sustainability targets are tightening. Meanwhile, leadership teams expect faster answers and clearer returns on investment.

At the same time, national policy and infrastructure decisions are reshaping how energy is generated, distributed and priced. The first Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) will prioritise where new generation assets are located. The National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) Whole Energy Market Strategy (WEMS) has highlighted the financial pressures associated with net zero. Additional mechanisms, such as Nuclear Regulated Asset Base (RAB) charges, may further influence business energy costs.

For multi-site organisations, this introduces uncertainty that cannot be managed with historic reporting alone.

Energy managers need better visibility, better tools and a more proactive approach.

In this guide, we explore:

How policy and market changes will affect commercial energy costs

Why automated energy management is replacing periodic reporting

How to prepare for Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS0 and evolving compliance demands

Where the biggest operational savings opportunities now sit

And the practical steps to prioritise in 2026

A changing energy system means greater business risk

For years, energy management focused largely on efficiency and procurement. Today, the challenge is broader.

The location of new generation capacity, changes to grid infrastructure and the cost of funding decarbonisation will increasingly influence how much organisations pay for energy and where pressures emerge geographically. What happens nationally is now directly felt at site level.

This makes forecasting harder and reactive management riskier.

Waiting for monthly bills to understand performance is simply too slow. By the time costs are visible, the opportunity to manage them has passed.

Forward-thinking organisations are responding by treating energy as live operational data rather than a historical utility expense.

From periodic reporting to automated energy management

Traditional reporting cycles were built around hindsight.

Monthly invoices and quarterly reviews explained what had already happened but offered little opportunity to intervene in real time.

That model no longer works.

Automated energy management, supported by continuous monitoring, analytics and alerts, is quickly becoming the standard for commercial estates. Instead of relying on manual analysis, energy monitoring software now captures detailed half-hourly or sub-hourly data across every site and asset, automatically highlighting inefficiencies and abnormal behaviour as it occurs.

This shift transforms how energy teams operate.

Rather than spending time collecting data and producing reports, they can focus on action:

identifying out-of-hours usage

spotting plant running inefficiently

optimising schedules

benchmarking sites

and prioritising improvements with the strongest return

The result is faster decisions, fewer surprises and measurable cost reductions.

In short, automated insight replaces manual investigation.

Compliance is becoming continuous, not occasional

Regulation is also changing the rhythm of energy management.

Frameworks such as Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and Scope reporting already require accurate, auditable information. The introduction of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) will go further, fundamentally altering how electricity consumption is measured and settled.

Under MHHS, half-hourly data will underpin billing and market participation. Organisations without reliable, granular data risk higher costs and reduced control.

This reinforces a simple reality: compliance cannot be treated as an annual project.

It needs to be embedded into daily operations.

When energy data is automatically captured through a commercial energy management system, reporting becomes easier and more reliable. When it isn’t, teams are left scrambling to piece together spreadsheets.

Good operational visibility naturally supports ESOS compliance and MHHS readiness. Poor visibility creates stress and uncertainty.

Proving ROI is now essential

Another shift is commercial.

Energy managers are increasingly expected to speak the language of finance as well as engineering. Senior stakeholders want to understand not only how energy is used, but what improvements deliver in real terms.

That means moving beyond kilowatt-hours and focusing on pounds saved.

Clear financial context changes everything. When an inefficiency can be shown to cost £30,000 per year, action becomes far easier to justify than when it is presented as a technical anomaly.

Modern energy data analytics allow teams to quantify waste, forecast savings and demonstrate results over time. This evidence-based approach turns energy management into a strategic contributor rather than a background function.

For many organisations, this visibility is the difference between stalled initiatives and approved investment.

The biggest savings are often hidden in day-to-day operations

Large estates rarely lose money through one dramatic failure.

Instead, waste tends to accumulate quietly across dozens or hundreds of small issues: heating and cooling running simultaneously, equipment left on overnight, poorly configured controls or buildings operating at full capacity while half empty.

Individually these problems appear minor. Collectively they can add up to significant sums.

Because they do not trigger alarms, they often remain invisible to traditional audits.

Continuous monitoring changes that.

By comparing sites and tracking patterns over time, energy managers can quickly identify anomalies and focus on operational optimisation before considering expensive capital projects. In many cases, simply running existing assets more intelligently delivers faster and more reliable returns than large infrastructure upgrades.

This is particularly important in an environment where budgets are tight and quick wins matter.

Preparing for a more dynamic energy market

The wider energy system is becoming increasingly data-driven and dynamic. Pricing structures are evolving, grid flexibility is growing, and settlement periods are shortening.

In this environment, understanding how consumption changes throughout the day becomes commercially valuable.

Organisations that can analyse load profiles and adjust behaviour accordingly will be better positioned to control costs. Those operating with delayed or incomplete information will struggle to respond.

This is where robust energy monitoring software provides a clear advantage, enabling teams to see exactly how and when energy is used across their estate and make informed decisions quickly.

Better data does not just improve reporting. It directly influences purchasing strategy and operational resilience.

The expanding role of the energy manager

All these changes point to a broader evolution in the role itself.

Energy managers are increasingly expected to act as strategic advisors, influencing decisions across facilities, finance and sustainability teams. Their remit now includes risk management, cost reduction and long-term planning.

To fulfil that role effectively, they need confidence in their data and the ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders.

When insights are accurate and easily accessible, energy teams gain influence. When information is fragmented, their impact is limited.

Technology alone does not create this shift, but the right systems make it possible.

How Optimal Monitoring supports modern energy teams

At Optimal Monitoring, we work with organisations facing exactly these pressures across retail, hospitality, public sector and other complex, multi-site environments.

The challenge is rarely motivation. It is visibility and time.

Our approach to automated energy management focuses on delivering clear, actionable insight without the need for heavy capital investment or complex implementation projects.

Through EMMA AI, our subscription-based energy management platform, organisations gain:

continuous, granular monitoring across every site

automated detection of anomalies and waste

clear financial impact reporting

support for ESOS and MHHS requirements

and rapid deployment without upfront CapEx

This allows energy teams to deliver meaningful savings quickly while freeing up time to focus on strategy rather than spreadsheets.

As Duncan Everett, CEO of Optimal Monitoring, explains:

“Energy managers don’t need more reports. They need clarity. When you can see what’s happening across every site in real time, you can act faster and deliver savings the business actually feels.”

Jon Slinn, Chief Commercial Officer, adds:

“The organisations that succeed aren’t necessarily investing more. They’re simply making better decisions earlier, because they have the right information at the right moment.”

The 2026 Energy Management Blueprint

Energy management is no longer delivered through isolated projects or annual reviews. It works best when embedded into the day-to-day running of the estate, supported by continuous data, automated insight and clear accountability at every site.

The organisations seeing the most consistent savings aren’t necessarily doing more. Instead, they focus on a small number of structural improvements that create lasting visibility and control across their operations. With the right foundations in place, compliance becomes easier, decisions become faster and performance improvements compound over time.

To make planning simpler, we’ve distilled these priorities into a practical one-page Energy Management Blueprint that many teams use to shape their annual roadmap. You can download the printable version to share internally or use the summary below as a guide.

The foundations of modern, automated energy management:

Continuous visibility across every site– Real-time monitoring through energy management software to identify issues early

Automated energy management– Alerts and analytics that replace manual reporting and surface waste instantly

MHHS-ready half-hourly data– Accurate load profiles to support smarter procurement and settlement

Compliance embedded into operations– ESOS and reporting built into everyday processes, not year-end exercises

Financially-led decision making– Clear ROI and savings cases expressed in pounds, not just kilowatt-hours

Operational optimisation before CapEx– Faster, lower-risk savings from better use of existing assets

Site-level accountability– Shared visibility and benchmarking to drive local ownership

Proactive policy awareness– Preparedness for market reforms such as SSEP, NESO strategy changes and evolving charges

Taken together, these steps create a more proactive, data-led and resilient energy management strategy, one that reduces business energy costs while giving teams greater confidence and control.

Looking ahead

The difference between reactive and proactive energy management will widen in 2026.

Organisations relying on historic reports will continue explaining rising costs after the fact. Those adopting automated energy management and real-time visibility will be able to prevent waste, respond faster and demonstrate clear commercial value.

In an uncertain market shaped by policy, infrastructure and regulatory change, that control is invaluable.

If you’d like to understand where the biggest opportunities sit across your estate, you can download the 2026 Energy Management Blueprint or speak with the Optimal Monitoring team for a complimentary energy visibility review.

Because when you can see clearly, you can act confidently, and the savings follow.

Looking Ahead: Why 2026 Will Be a Defining Year

As we move into 2026, the UK Energy Market is shifting again, creating new pressures and opportunities for commercial energy management across every sector, from retail and hospitality to manufacturing, education, and healthcare. The turbulence of 2022–2024 has eased, but not disappeared, and the past twelve months have shown that volatility is no longer an occasional disruption; it is now a structural feature of the UK Energy Market.

For senior managers responsible for commercial energy management, compliance, and cost control, the question isn’t merely what is happening now, it’s what happens next, and what proactive steps are needed to stay ahead.

This overview brings together where 2025 has taken the sector and the trends shaping 2026, offering clarity on what matters most for commercial energy management in the year ahead: stability, regulation, efficiency, sustainability, and protecting profits.

2025 in Review: Stabilisation Without Relief

After the price shocks of previous years, 2025 brought a sense of stabilisation, but not a return to “normal.” Wholesale prices settled at a higher baseline than businesses were used to pre-2020. Many organisations locked into multi-year contracts in 2023 and 2024 are now navigating renewals that remain costlier than expected.

· Structural price pressure remained

Even with relative stability, prices did not fall to pre-crisis levels. Demand across Europe, ongoing global uncertainty, and infrastructure constraints kept commercial energy costs elevated.

· Efficiency became an operational priority

The rise in energy intensity across sites made inefficiency more visible and more expensive. Businesses that previously relied on behavioural changes alone found that permanent operational fixes were needed to hit budgets.

· Compliance expectations increased

With regulatory regimes such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) requiring large enterprises within the UK Energy Market to audit and report their energy use and efficiency measures, and growing investor and stakeholder scrutiny of carbon and cost performance, 2025 was when energy reporting became less about annual documents and more about continuous performance visibility.

What’s Coming in 2026: Six Trends UK Energy Market should prepare for

2026 will bring both challenge and opportunity. Here are the forces most likely to shape the year ahead.

1. Higher baseline costs and tighter budgets

Wholesale costs are expected to remain above pre-2020 averages, driven by demand, supply constraints, and the long-term cost of energy transition. Large businesses will tighten operational budgets, meaning energy managers must show measurable returns on efficiency work.

What this means for you:
You’ll need more accurate data on waste, quicker identification of faults, and clear visibility of which actions deliver the biggest impact. The pressure to justify savings, not just suggest them, will intensify.

2. Rising expectations for transparent commercial energy management

Stakeholders now want more than consumption totals. They expect granularity: where energy is used, what’s driving waste, and how interventions compare across the estate.

What this means for you:
Manual reporting won’t keep pace. Systems that consolidate and unify data are becoming essential to meet reporting expectations without increasing staff workload.

3. Regulation and sustainability pressures tightening

Although 2026 may not include a new regulatory overhaul, the direction of travel is clear. With frameworks like ESOS already in place, scrutiny from lenders, customers and investors will increase. Organisations that can demonstrate well-managed energy performance will have a competitive advantage.

What this means for you:
Clear, consistent insight will be essential. Energy managers who can quantify avoided consumption, project ROI, and support investment cases will be better placed to secure budgets.

4. Growing complexity across commercial estates

Many businesses now operate more dispersed portfolios than ever before – part office, part remote, part hybrid, part specialist sites. This creates uneven consumption patterns and a greater risk of unnoticed waste.

What this means for you:
You’ll likely face more anomalies, more variance between sites, and a greater need for automated detection of unexpected activity. Energy strategies in 2026 must be designed around mixed estates, not just traditional portfolios.

5. Data-driven decision-making becomes non-negotiable

The major shift in the UK Energy Market for 2026 will be a move from reactive to predictive energy management. Instead of waiting for monthly bills or quarterly reports, organisations will rely on continuous insight to prioritise fixes and prevent wasted spend. Recent public analysis shows wholesale energy prices remain subject to global factors and supply constraints, meaning unpredictability remains a feature of the market.

What this means for you:
Data will play a bigger role in everyday operations. The businesses that succeed will be those that treat energy like any other strategic resource: measured, monitored, and managed with precision.

6. The arrival of MHHS — more granular data, smarter energy decisions

A key structural change coming into play in 2026 is the rollout of the UK-wide Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS). As of September 2025, the central systems required to support MHHS are live, and from October 2025 the migration of meters, including those at commercial sites, will begin.

Once fully implemented (targeted for mid-2027), MHHS will mean that electricity consumption is settled based on actual half-hourly data rather than estimates or standard profiles.

What this means for you:

Access to much more granular data on building/site-level electricity use -enabling more precise monitoring of consumption patterns, wastage, and the impact of energy-saving measures.

Opportunity to align procurement, demand-response and operational scheduling with real usage and potential off-peak pricing or flexible-tariff opportunities.

Ability to underpin future energy-efficiency or decarbonisation initiatives with robust data – helping satisfy growing compliance, ESG and investor reporting demands.

For organisations serious about commercial energy management, MHHS represents a foundational shift – and one that should be integrated into planning for 2026 and beyond.

How senior managers in the UK Energy Market can stay ahead in 2026

Taken together, these trends point to a clear conclusion: 2026 will reward organisations that build resilient, insight-led commercial energy management strategies.

The landscape remains complex – but it’s more predictable than it was two years ago. The opportunity now lies in moving from firefighting to forward planning.

Senior managers who focus on the following priorities will be best positioned:

Eliminate avoidable waste. Every uncontrolled hour of consumption has a direct cost. Quick wins and operational fixes matter.

Strengthen reporting for compliance and investment

Accurate, reliable energy data is increasingly essential to meet regulatory expectations and shape sustainability strategies.

Use data to prioritise action

Focus teams on the interventions that deliver the greatest impact – not the ones that sound most appealing.

Support sustainability with measurable performance

Evidence of performance, not narrative, will matter most to boards, investors, and customers.

Final Thought

2026 won’t be the easiest year for the UK Energy Market, but it may be one of the most strategically important. The organisations that embed data-led decision-making and proactive efficiency measures will not only manage costs more effectively, but also position themselves ahead of regulatory, operational, and sustainability expectations.

Meter profile classes are shown in the first two digits of your MPAN. They determine how your consumption is recorded and billed.

01 & 02: Residential meters (single or dual-rate tariffs)

03 & 04: Small business meters with single or dual-rate usage

05-08: Larger business meters with varying load factors

00: Half-hourly meters for peak loads above 100kW

Getting the right meter profile data ensures your usage patterns are properly tracked and billed fairly.

Half-Hourly (HH) Meters and Compliance with P272

You will note in Figure 2 that there is one meter noted as an HH meter.

This is the 00 class meters for a large supply. So in essence, all large users should be on an HH meter.

You will find examples where this is not the case, but they are rare.

However, since 2017 and the introduction of P272 (HH settlement for non-domestic meters), the requirement has been that all maximum demand customers (denoted by meter class 5-8) have HH data for settlement. As a result, this HH data should be available to the customer. Where is the meter in this class?. Under P272, HH data is mandatory.

Editor’s Note: If your meter class 5-8 has not been switched, you are being billed on a default profile, which means you are likely paying more than you should. You should demand that the meter be changed.

Half-Hourly Meters and P272

Since 2017, all businesses with meter profile classes 5-8 have been required to move to half-hourly settlement under P272 legislation. This reform was introduced to improve billing accuracy and transparency across the commercial energy market. By recording consumption data every 30 minutes, suppliers and customers gain access to far more detailed energy data, allowing for precise billing and deeper insight into when and how electricity is used.

For organisations with significant energy demand, half-hourly metering highlights inefficiencies that would otherwise remain hidden under standard profiles. Analysing this energy data enables businesses to identify periods of excessive use, optimise load management, and reduce consumption during peak times. If your supply still operates on a default profile instead of an accurate half-hourly settlement, you may be overpaying for your electricity. Ensuring compliance with P272 and reviewing your meter profile class is therefore an essential step in effective cost and energy management.

AMR and Smart Meters

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Smart Meters represent a significant evolution in the way energy data is collected and utilised across UK businesses. AMR meters automatically transmit readings to suppliers, removing the need for manual checks and ensuring billing accuracy. This provides businesses with consistent, real-time energy data to support performance monitoring and forecasting.

Smart Meters, including SMETS1 and SMETS2 models, go even further. These devices communicate securely through the Data Communications Company (DCC) network, enabling a two-way flow of data between your meter, supplier, and authorised third parties. This allows more efficient energy management and enhanced visibility across multiple sites or departments. By utilising this detailed energy data, businesses can pinpoint inefficiencies, track progress over time, and make informed, data-driven decisions to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.

Who Owns and Manages Meter Data?

For larger energy supplies and half-hourly meters, Meter Operators (MOPs), Data Collectors (DCs), and Data Aggregators (DAs) play key roles in managing and validating your energy data. The MOP is responsible for maintaining your metering equipment, while the DC and DA handle the collection, verification, and aggregation of your usage data before it’s passed on for billing and settlement.

Many businesses do not realise that they have the right to appoint their own MOP, DC, and DA rather than relying on their energy supplier’s default contracts. By reviewing these arrangements, you can often reduce costs, improve access to detailed meter profile data, and gain more control over your energy data. For organisations with multiple meter profile classes, this flexibility allows for greater consistency and accuracy across all sites, ensuring that energy performance data aligns with operational goals.

Using Energy Data for Savings

Modern energy platforms have made it easier than ever to turn complex energy data into actionable insights. Systems like EMMA AI connect directly to your MOP, DC, and DA services to provide live analysis of consumption patterns across different meter profile classes. By continuously monitoring this information, businesses can identify inefficiencies, detect energy wastage, and make informed decisions that directly impact their bottom line.

Leveraging your energy data in this way enables more than just cost reduction, it supports compliance with key energy reporting frameworks such as ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) and SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting). Through benchmarking and performance tracking, businesses can target specific areas for improvement, reduce emissions, and demonstrate progress toward sustainability goals.

The Future of Metering

The introduction of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS), due by 2026, marks the next significant milestone in the UK’s journey toward more intelligent energy management. Under MHHS, all electricity supplies, regardless of meter profile class, will be settled using half-hourly energy data. This shift will standardise data collection across the market, ensuring that every business benefits from accurate, granular consumption insights.

As a result, energy data will play an increasingly vital role in how organisations monitor performance, forecast costs, and optimise efficiency. Businesses that invest in advanced metering technology and analytics platforms will be well placed to take advantage of these changes. The future of energy management lies in understanding and acting upon the wealth of information captured through half-hourly meter profile data, helping companies operate more efficiently and contribute to the UK’s long-term net-zero targets.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment and energy-saving identification programme for large UK organisations. It requires qualifying businesses to:

Measure total energy consumption across buildings, transport, and processes

Carry out energy audits to identify cost-effective energy-saving opportunities

Report compliance to the Environment Agency

ESOS Phase 3 placed greater emphasis on improving data accuracy and identifying cost-effective energy-saving opportunities. It also introduced more robust audit standards and required organisations to demonstrate clearer oversight of their energy use.

With that deadline behind us it’s time to be looking ahead, Phase 4 will conclude in December 2027, but with enhanced requirements, and so the time to act is now.

A stronger focus on implementation planning, not just identifying savings opportunities

Net zero carbon means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions balanced by carbon removals, such as reforestation or carbon capture.

A credible zero carbon company will:

Reduce emissions across all areas of operations (Scope 1: direct emissions, Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy, and Scope 3: all other indirect emissions in the value chain).

Offset only what can’t be avoided, focusing on long-term reduction over short-term compensation.

Embed transparency, using data to track and report emissions in line with international standards.

This differs from terms like carbon neutral, which often rely heavily on offsets without addressing deep operational emissions, or climate positive, which suggests going beyond net zero.

The drive for net zero carbon is being shaped by legislation, market forces, and shifting public expectations.

Regulatory Pressure

In the UK, businesses are already subject to legislation such as:

The Net Zero Strategy (2050): Legally binding emissions reduction.

SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting): Annual energy disclosure.

ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme): Mandatory energy audits for large enterprises.

Falling behind on compliance can mean fines, lost contracts, and reputational damage. Read our simple guide to ESOS »

Investor and Consumer Expectations

From boardrooms to shop floors, stakeholders want to know what action is being taken. Investors favour low-risk, future-proofed businesses. Consumers prefer brands that are doing the right thing.

Greenwashing Risks

Without measurable goals, companies risk accusations of greenwashing – undermining trust and creating legal vulnerabilities. A true net zero business shows evidence, not just ambition.

It Drives Efficiency

Reducing emissions means identifying energy waste, streamlining processes, and saving money. Platforms like Optimal Monitoring help companies detect inefficiencies and reduce usage before investing in costly CapEx.

It Influences Supply Chains

Getting to net zero requires working with suppliers to reduce embedded emissions. Businesses that take the lead here can shape procurement standards across their sector.

It Builds Competitive Advantage

A net zero business is future-ready. It signals resilience, innovation, and long-term thinking – helping to win tenders, attract talent, and gain customer loyalty.

Many UK companies are working towards Net Zero, and taking significant steps to reach this goal. Large companies like Vodafone, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, AstraZeneca, and Rolls-Royce have made public commitments to reduce or eliminate their carbon footprint, with targets ranging from 2030 to 2050. Smaller companies are also active in reaching this goal and we are seeing businesses pioneering innovative sustainable practices.

Some of the most ambitious carbon net zero companies are in highly competitive industries:

Hospitality: Chains like Whitbread are reducing emissions through smart building controls, low-energy kitchen equipment, and monitoring platforms to track usage across multiple sites. They are the first UK hotel chain to commit to net-zero emissions by 2040.

Retail: Major retailers are adopting real-time energy monitoring to reduce waste, stay compliant, and cut operational costs. Tesco have ‘Our Planet Plan’ and this outlines the steps they’re taking to reach net zero across the full value chain. Aiming to be carbon neutral in Group operations by 2035 and net zero across our full value chain, aligned to a 1.5C trajectory, by 2050. We are working with Card Factory monitoring their energy use and identifying significant energy and cost savings.

Property: Developers are designing net zero buildings with integrated data systems to optimise performance from day one. For example buildings at London’s King’s Cross development have been designed to minimise environmental impact and reduce running costs. Some of the key features of these buildings are orientation for solar shading, thermal mass for cooling, passive ventilation and biodiversity-friendly roofs. This development is part of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment.

In each case, the companies leading the way are using data to guide decisions, track progress, and communicate transparently. Net zero isn’t a guess, it’s a metric.

Traditional systems, such as monthly spreadsheets or manual meter checks, can only take you so far. Reliance on these methods of energy reporting means your business is missing opportunities for energy and cost savings.

That’s where AI steps in. AI-based energy management systems give you real-time insight, intelligent analysis, and instant recommendations. All without adding pressure to already stretched teams. In this post, we explore how AI is changing commercial energy management, and what it means for your business.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) in energy management refers to software systems that can analyse large volumes of data, spot patterns, and make smart decisions or recommendations, all without human input.

In practice, typically that might mean:

Flagging unusually high usage on a particular circuit

Predicting peak demand periods

Automatically generating insights from your usage data

Identifying energy waste as soon as it happens

AI doesn’t just collect data, it learns from it. This enables you to turn data into actions. Over time, the system becomes better at recognising your energy patterns and flagging opportunities for savings.

Whilst some businesses are making the most of modern technology within their business and are already benefiting from cost savings, there are many commercial buildings still rely on traditional systems for reporting and managing energy consumption and spend. So typlically that looks like reliance upon:

Monthly bills or half-hourly data

Manual checks by facilities staff

Static dashboards that show usage, but don’t interpret it

This approach results in missed savings, delayed action, and performance that falls short against KPIs. By the time a problem shows up in your energy report, the cost has already been incurred.

With AI, that is flipped on its head. So instead of historical data you get real-time, actionable information, increasing awareness of usage patterns and identifying anomalies often before you even know there’s an issue.

Not every system that claims to use AI is truly intelligent. Yes, AI can save countless hours by doing the leg-work, such as data collection. But to be truly intelligent you need to be looking for a system that will turn that data into insight and action. That’s really where the power lies.

Here are some points that you should look for when considering an AI-based system:

Pattern recognition: Can it learn from past data and make predictions?

Proactive alerts: Does it notify you before a problem becomes expensive?

Recommendations: Does it tell you what to do next – not just what happened?

Self-improvement: Can the system get smarter over time?

An effective AI-based energy management system should work with your team, not just feed them more data. This enables business teams can deliver real value towards KPIs. The AI solution becomes integral in the day-to-day monitoring and management of energy consumption in the business. EMMA AI is a truly intelligent management system that not ownly collects data but identifies insights and actions that business teams can implement.

Large buildings and estates come with layers of complexity. There are multiple sites, multiple floors, departments, systems, and usage types. AI is ideally suited to handle these types of complexity, going beyond what can be achieved manually, such as:

Monitoring all areas simultaneously

Identifying inefficiencies across zones or equipment

Adapting to different usage patterns (eg weekends, seasons, or shift work)

Reducing the time and effort needed for manual oversight

This level of performance is especially valuable for estates managers, sustainability leads, or finance teams with multiple sites and limited internal energy expertise. AI reveals insights through comprehensive analysis of multiple data sources that business teams can then leverage.

For different departments and personnel within a business such as facilities managers, sustainability leads, and finance teams, effective energy monitoring is a powerful tool that can lead to reduced costs, cuts in carbon, and improvements in operational efficiency.

What does monitoring really involve, and why is it particularly important in commercial settings? In this blog post we’ll address these key questions…

Tending to be larger, more complex, and more energy-intensive than domestic buildings, commercial properties often have multiple zones, varied occupancy, and extended hours of use. Heating, lighting, ventilation, and equipment all add up. Without a clear view of energy consumption across the property, inefficiencies can easily creep in unnoticed.

Many businesses are still relying on monthly utility bills or outdated meter readings to track energy use. This only provides businesses with a historical view of their energy consumption – what they have already used. At this point there is nothing that can be done to address what has gone before. Whereas with real-time energy monitoring, commercial teams will have the data and insights that will enable them to:

So what would a typical energy monitoring system look like? Typically, it would include:
