How to start on the journey to net zero

Reaching net zero may seem like a long-term goal – but the journey starts with small, achievable steps. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to build on existing progress, the key is to start with data, build a plan, and take consistent action.

Here’s how to get started.

1. Define what net zero means for your business

Net zero means reducing your greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible, and then offsetting any remaining emissions you can’t eliminate.

Before you begin, define:

  • Which emissions you’ll include (Scope 1, 2, and 3)
  • What your baseline year is
  • Your target date for reaching net zero
  • Whether you’re aligning with a recognised framework (e.g. SBTi, PAS 2060)

This clarity will shape your strategy and help secure internal buy-in.

2. Measure your emissions

Start by tracking your energy usage, it’s often the largest and easiest category to measure. Use:

  • Utility bills
  • Sub-metering data
  • Building management system (BMS) reports
  • AI energy management platforms like EMMA AI

Once you understand your Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect electricity) emissions, you can start to explore Scope 3 (supply chain, travel, waste, etc.).

3. Identify areas of waste and inefficiency

Before investing in major upgrades, look at your current systems and behaviours. Energy waste is common, and often avoidable.

Quick wins include:

  • Adjusting HVAC and lighting schedules
  • Fixing control logic issues
  • Shutting down idle equipment
  • Streamlining processes to reduce consumption

4. Set clear, phased targets

Break your net zero goal into smaller, achievable stages. For example:

  • 10% reduction in electricity use over 12 months
  • All lighting upgraded to LED by 2026
  • Switch to green electricity within 6 months
  • Full Scope 1 and 2 reporting established by year-end

Setting milestones helps you track progress and keep the momentum going.

5. Engage the wider business

Reaching net zero is a whole-business effort. Success depends on people understanding the goal and their role in achieving it.

Support engagement by:

  • Sharing your targets internally
  • Running carbon awareness sessions
  • Making sustainability part of team KPIs
  • Giving energy managers tools and support to act

6. Use your data to guide decisions

Energy and emissions data will help you:

  • Prioritise upgrades
  • Build business cases for CapEx projects
  • Track impact and return on investment
  • Report progress accurately

The better your data, the better your decisions.
