What is energy sub-metering?
Sub-metering measures consumption for individual areas or equipment, beyond the total recorded by your main meter. It helps show where resources are being used and where to investigate waste.
Can you monitor electricity, gas, water and heat?
Yes. We assess the utility, installation and data requirements to specify suitable meters and connections for electricity, gas, water and heat.
Do I need to replace my existing sub-meters?
Not necessarily. We assess your installed meters and connect compatible equipment, including suitable Modbus and BMS data sources. Additional data loggers may be needed to collect readings.
Where should sub-meters be installed?
That depends on what you need to understand. Typical locations include individual buildings, departments, tenant areas, heating and cooling systems, or energy-intensive production equipment.
How is sub-metering equipment installed?
We assess your site, specify suitable equipment and arrange installation by the appropriate engineers. Physical installation takes place on site; some configuration and data connection work may be completed remotely.
Will installation disrupt our operations?
Requirements depend on the equipment and utility involved. We plan access and any necessary shutdowns with your team before installation to minimise disruption.
How much does sub-metering cost?
Costs depend on meter numbers, utility types, site access and data connections. We assess your requirements and provide a tailored quotation, including installation and any ongoing services.
How does sub-meter data connect to Emma AI?

Can sub-metering support ESOS and SECR reporting?
Sub-metered consumption data can support energy assessments and reporting by providing a more detailed picture of energy use. Installing meters alone does not fulfil all ESOS or SECR requirements. See the government guidance on ESOS and SECR .
Which organisations benefit from sub-metering?
Sub-metering is useful wherever a main meter provides too little detail. This includes universities, NHS estates, manufacturers, landlords, retailers and other multi-site organisations.
